6/04 - Time for An Awakening
“The field is the world. The good seed are those who belong to the Kingdom, while the weeds are those who belong to the evil one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the world and the reapers are the angels.” Matt: 13:38-39
In 1734, a young man named Jonathan Edwards pastored a church in Northampton, Massachusetts. After months of fruitless labor, a young woman of ill repute was saved. The fires of revival broke out and within six months, 1,300 souls were saved in a town of 1,100 people. Before long, revival spread to over 100 towns in the American colonies and continued until 1743. This was the first great awakening.
By the year 1800, our nation had once again become spiritually cold. Only one in fifteen of America’s population attended church. Under the ministry of Rev. James McGready, strange spiritual manifestations began happening in Kentucky. People came by the thousands to camp meetings where the Spirit of God fell in tremendous power. What is known as America’s Second Great Awakening continued until 1840. Approximately 500,000 people were saved under the ministry of Charles Finney. In Rochester, NY alone, 100,000 accepted Christ. Church attendance increased by tenfold during this time.
Between the Civil War, Darwinism and theological liberalism, America declined into a nation ignorant of God by 1900. The Welsh Revival of 1904 spread to America and in 1905, revivals blazed in many parts of the country. People came from all over the world to the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles, CA. Daily meetings continued for three years as multitudes were saved, filled with the Holy Ghost and healed. From there, the Pentecostal Movement exploded all over the globe.
The 1940’s saw the Healing Revival and the Latter Rain Revival. With the 60’s and 70’s came the Jesus Movement and the Charismatic Renewal. Finally, the Brownsville Revival in the 90’s recorded 100,000 conversions in two years.
Over twenty years have passed since a great move of God’s Spirit somewhere in our nation. Moral decay is all around us. The only hope is a spiritual awakening. We must have revival!
Prayer - O Lord, I cry out to you in behalf of a lost and sinful people. I know that you are not a respecter of persons and that you are always the same. So I ask you, Lord, once again; send revival. Awaken this people to your Presence and eternity, in the name of Jesus, amen!
